The Maryland Science Center is a popular attraction located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor area. It has been open to the public since 1976 and features three levels of exhibits, a planetarium, and an observatory. The center played a major role in revitalizing the Inner Harbor, which was once an industrial area but is now a bustling downtown destination. A modern addition was opened in 2004, which includes a vast array of hands-on exhibits showcasing physical science, space, and the human body. The center has been recognized for its family-friendly environment, winning awards such as the 2006 Best of Baltimore award for "Best Place to Take Kids" and being named one of the “10-Best Science Centers for Families” by Parent's magazine in 2008.
